Information Governance Quickstart Program
The Information Governance QuickStart ProgramTM is a limited and packaged engagement that MetaGovernance offers to its customers. Many companies have been given recommendations of findings from examiners, auditors, or their boards to implement a “Governance” strategy, including reliable metrics for their data assets. Additionally companies are attending governance conferences and walking away with the sense they need to take some action, but are not certain how to get started. The Information Governance QuickStart ProgramTM provides a clear direction and results. Tangible deliverables of the offering include a current state assessment of your level of Information Governance achievement, data quality assessment and findings, and Information Governance processes and procedures. MetaGovernance bases all its work on the MetaGovernance Information Governance Achievement Model and Navigating To The Future process to ensure a targeted, methodical engagement.
The Information Governance QuickStart ProgramTM is tailored to your organizational requirements, depending upon the nature of the issues that need to be addressed. The following outline provides a general flow of the tasks within this program:
- Meet with business and technology personnel to achieve a common vocabulary and understanding of Information Governance. Define this understanding in the form of the people, processes, technology, and communication needed to achieve effective Information Governance in the context of your regulatory, risk, and competitive environment.
- Meet with the business and technology personnel to better understand the current state of Information Governance at your organization and get a sense of desired future direction and timing. Document these findings in the context of the MetaGovernance Information Governance Achievement. This model also shows the suggested corrective actions needed to advance Information Governance within your organization.
- Clearly define the stakeholders of the data within the project scope (data owners, data stewards, data consumers, and data custodians).
- Determine and document the key characteristics about the data within the project scope that will become the essence of the Information Governance framework.
- Work with your organization’s Technology staff to profile selected sets of data. This profiling effort will be limited in scope that is designed to present sufficient examples for gaining a comprehensive understanding of the process. MetaGovernance will target data patterns or values that could cause data quality issues for the purpose of assessing the current state of the data and the needed roadmap forward. In the event technology staff is not available, recommendations will be made on alternate technical resources that could be used for data profiling.
- Review the current state of applications that are used for operational reporting, financial disclosure and ad-hoc reporting within the organization to determine the degree to which Information Governance controls and best practice have been implemented.
- Review the design and capabilities of the data reconciliation technologies and business procedures to determine the degree to which the existing reconciliation framework satisfies business requirements in the context of a comprehensive Information Governance framework.
- Define the Information Governance roles and responsibilities, including:
a. Business Units (data owners)
b. Business Units (consumers)
c. Technology
d. Enterprise Risk/Internal Audit
- Define an organizational structure that will be used to monitor and progress Information Governance within your organization (e.g. Information Governance Council, Information Governance Working Groups).
- Define an Information Governance communication plan, including reporting progress and findings to executive management and the various stakeholders across your organization.
- Define metrics that can be used on an ongoing basis to measure the progress of Information Governance at your organization.
The Information Governance QuickStart ProgramTM is designed to take an organization from an Isolated or Awareness achievement level on the MetaGovernance Achievement Model, and position them with the understanding and knowledge to progress Information Governance forward with little or no additional external support. Emphasis is placed on training and understanding to enable a strong degree of self-sufficiency. The Information Governance QuickStart ProgramTM is also industry independent. The Information Governance principals are relevant across all industry verticals. Only the data, regulators, and environment drivers change.
